How Many Work Hours Are in a Year?

A full-time 40-hour week comes to 2,080 work hours a year (40 × 52). The calendar gives a slightly different count: 2026 has 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at 8 a day. Hours actually worked are lower once paid holidays and time off come out: 2,080 minus 10 holidays and 15 PTO days is 1,880.

Where does 2,080 hours come from?

It is 40 hours a week multiplied by 52 weeks. Both numbers are conventions. Not every full-time job is 40 hours, and a year is not exactly 52 weeks: 365 ÷ 7 = 52.14, so 40 hours in every calendar week is really 52.14 × 40 = 2,085.7 hours. Payroll ignores the fraction and uses 2,080 because it divides cleanly into every pay cycle:

So 2,080 is the number to use whenever a figure is defined per year on a 40-hour schedule: converting a salary to an hourly rate, setting a full-time equivalent, or budgeting labor. It is not the number of hours anyone actually works, because it counts every weekday, holidays included.

How many working days are in 2026?

261. At 8 hours a day that is 2,088 hours, eight more than the 2,080 convention. The count moves a little from year to year. A normal year is 52 weeks plus one day, and that extra day is whatever weekday the year starts on. If it starts on a weekday you get 261 working days; if it starts on a Saturday or Sunday you get 260. A leap year has two extra days, so it ranges from 260 (starting Saturday, like 2028) to 262 (starting Monday, like 2024).

These are weekday counts, not work days. None of them subtract holidays, and which days are holidays depends on your employer and country. The calendar figure matters when you are budgeting a specific year, say labor for a 2026 project. For anything defined per year in general, 2,080 is the figure people expect.

How do you calculate the hours you actually work in a year?

Start from your real schedule and take out the days you are paid but not working.

  1. Start from your scheduled hours per week, net of unpaid breaks. A 9-to-5 day is 8 hours on the clock, but with a one-hour unpaid lunch it is 7 hours of work, so the week is 35:00, not 40:00. Paid vs unpaid breaks covers which breaks come off.
  2. Multiply by 52. 40 × 52 = 2,080. For one specific calendar year, multiply weekdays by daily hours instead: 261 × 8 = 2,088 for 2026.
  3. Subtract paid holidays you do not work. Count them and multiply by your daily hours: 10 holidays × 8 = 80 hours.
  4. Subtract vacation, sick days and other time off. 15 days × 8 = 120 hours. If you accrue time off by the hour, PTO accrual from hours worked shows how to total it.
  5. Read the result as hours worked. 2,080 − 80 − 120 = 1,880.

That gives three different numbers for the same job, and each answers a different question:

Holiday counts, PTO policies and what counts as paid time vary by employer, state and contract. The figures above are examples, and this is general information for the United States, not legal or tax advice.

How many work hours a year is 37.5, 35 or 30 hours a week?

Multiply the weekly hours by 52. The right-hand column takes off two weeks for vacation, which is 50 working weeks.

5050:002,6002,500
6060:003,1203,000

The 2,000-hour figure people quote is the 40-hour row with two weeks off; it is a rule of thumb, not a different standard. Rotating schedules work the same way once you know the hours per cycle:

If your week is irregular, part-time vs full-time hours covers totaling a scattered week before you scale it up.

How do you convert a salary to an hourly rate, and back?

Divide the salary by the hours in your work year. On a 40-hour week that is 2,080.

Use your real week, not the convention, if it is not 40 hours. The same $52,000 on a 37.5-hour week is $52,000 ÷ 1,950 = $26.67 an hour, and on a 35-hour week it is $52,000 ÷ 1,820 = $28.57. Dividing by 2,080 would understate both.

There is also an effective rate per hour actually worked: $52,000 ÷ 1,880 = $27.66. That is the number to compare against a contract offer with no paid holidays or vacation, because a contractor earns nothing on those days. A freelancer runs the same math in reverse. With 1,880 available hours and a realistic 1,500 billable (about 80% utilization), a $90,000 target needs $90,000 ÷ 1,500 = $60 an hour. Hourly rate to pay covers rounding and invoicing, and the billable hours chart covers 6-minute increments.

Worked example: total a real year from timesheets

Benchmarks are fine for planning, but at the end of the year you have real timesheets in hours and minutes. Here is a year already totaled by quarter, net of unpaid breaks, for someone paid $24 an hour.

QuarterHours (H:MM)MinutesDecimal hours
Q1498:3529,915498.58
Q2512:1030,730512.17
Q3467:4528,065467.75
Q4519:1031,150519.17
Year1,997:40119,8601,997.67
  1. Add the quarters in H:MM, carrying 60 minutes into an hour. 498:35 + 512:10 = 1,010:45. Add 467:45: 1,010:45 + 467:45 = 1,477:90, and 90 minutes is 1:30, so 1,478:30. Add 519:10: 1,997:40.
  2. Check in minutes. 29,915 + 30,730 + 28,065 + 31,150 = 119,860. Divide by 60: 1,997 remainder 40. Same answer.
  3. Compare with the benchmark. 2,080:00 − 1,997:40 = 82:20 under the 2,080 convention, which is about right for a year with two weeks of vacation and a few holidays.
  4. Find the average week. 119,860 ÷ 52 = 2,305 minutes, which is 38:25. Average hours per week explains how to choose the number of weeks to divide by.
  5. Turn it into pay. 1,997:40 is 1,997 + 40 ÷ 60 = 1,997.67 hours. 1,997.6667 × $24 = $47,944.00 at straight time.

Now the shortcut that goes wrong. Type the quarterly totals into a calculator as decimals, 498.35 + 512.10 + 467.45 + 519.10, and you get 1,997.00. That pays 1,997.00 × $24 = $47,928.00, which is $16.00 short, because the calculator read 1:40 of minutes as 1.00 of an hour. The gap is small here only because there are four entries. Do the same with 52 weekly totals and every week's minutes get read as hundredths. Why your phone's calculator can't add time shows what that does to a single week.

A yearly total does not decide overtime. In the US, overtime is generally worked out week by week, so a year under 2,080 can still contain overtime weeks and a year over it can contain none. How to calculate overtime walks through the weekly rule. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Which yearly figure should you use?

What mistakes throw off a yearly total?

Using 2,080 for a job that is not 40 hours

A 37.5-hour week is 1,950 hours a year and a 35-hour week is 1,820. Dividing a salary by 2,080 understates the hourly rate by $1.67 at $52,000 on a 37.5-hour week.

Forgetting the unpaid lunch

“Nine to five” is 8 hours elapsed, but with an hour of unpaid lunch it is 7 hours of work: 35 a week and 1,820 a year, not 2,080. Count the hours you are paid for, not the hours between arrival and departure.

Counting holidays as worked hours

Paid holidays belong in paid hours and come out of worked hours. If you are measuring output or billable time, start from 1,880, not 2,080.

Treating 2,000 as exact

2,000 is 2,080 with two weeks removed. It is a fair shortcut for a quick estimate and the wrong number for a payroll conversion.

Reading 38:25 as 38.25

An average week of 38:25 is 38.42 hours, so a year is 38.4167 × 52 = 1,997.67 hours, or 1,997:40. Multiply 38.25 by 52 instead and you get 1,989.00, which is 8:40 short, because 38.25 hours is 38:15. Hours to decimal has the full minutes table.

Total a year without converting by hand

Hours adds timesheets in H:MM with the carry handled for you (498:35 + 512:10 + 467:45 + 519:10 = 1,997:40), with no 24-hour cap on the total. Tap once to see it in decimal hours (1,997.67), enter your rate to see pay, divide by 52 for your average week, keep the running total in saved history, and export a CSV or PDF timesheet. Frequently asked questions

How many work hours are in a year?

The standard figure is 2,080: 40 hours a week × 52 weeks. It counts every weekday as worked, so hours actually worked are lower once paid holidays and time off come out.

How many working days are in 2026?

261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at 8 a day before holidays and time off. 2025, 2027 and 2029 also have 261; 2028 is a leap year that starts on a Saturday and has 260.

How many work hours are in a year with 2 weeks of vacation?

2,000 on a 40-hour week: 2,080 − 80. That is where the rough 2,000-hour rule comes from. Take off paid holidays too: 10 of them at 8 hours brings it to 1,920.

How many hours a year is part-time?

Weekly hours × 52. 20 hours a week is 1,040 a year, 25 is 1,300, 30 is 1,560 and 32 is 1,664, before holidays and time off.

How many hours are in a whole year?

8,760 in a normal year (24 × 365) and 8,784 in a leap year. That is the figure for uptime or on-call coverage, not for work hours.

Is a year exactly 52 weeks?

No. 365 ÷ 7 = 52.14 weeks, so 40 hours in every week of a calendar year is really 2,085.7 hours, and a leap year is 52.29 weeks. Payroll uses the round 52 weeks and 2,080 hours by convention.

How do I turn a salary into an hourly rate?

Divide by the hours in your work year. On a 40-hour week that is 2,080: $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00. On a 37.5-hour week divide by 1,950: $52,000 ÷ 1,950 = $26.67.
