Hours to Decimal: Every Conversion Explained
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the whole hours. 7:45 → 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 decimal hours, and 8:15 → 8.25. To go the other way, multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.4 × 60 = 24, so 3.4 hours is 3:24. Minutes run to 60, not 100 — so 1:30 is 1.5, never 1.30.

What does "hours to decimal" actually mean?
Clock time is written in base 60. An hour holds 60 minutes, so 8:45 means eight hours and three-quarters of another one. Decimal hours write that same amount as one ordinary number — 8.75 — so it can be multiplied, summed in a spreadsheet column, or typed into a payroll field.
Nothing about the time changes in the conversion. Only the notation does. That matters because payroll systems, invoicing tools, and spreadsheet formulas almost all expect decimal, while clocks, schedules, and your own memory of the day work in H:MM.
What is the formula for converting hours to decimal?
One formula covers every case:
decimal hours = hours + (minutes ÷ 60) + (seconds ÷ 3600)
Drop the last term whenever seconds do not matter, which is most of the time. Worked through in order:
- Keep the whole hours as they are. In
6:20, the 6 is already a decimal 6. - Divide the minutes by 60.
20 ÷ 60 = 0.3333… - Round once, at the end. Two decimal places is the payroll standard:
0.33. - Add the pieces.
6 + 0.33 = 6.33decimal hours. - Check by multiplying back.
0.33 × 60 = 19.8, which rounds to the 20 minutes you started with.
The mental shortcut: divide the minutes by 6 to get tenths of an hour. 38 ÷ 6 = 6.33, so 38 minutes is about 0.633 hours. It takes a second and lands within a rounding error of the exact answer.

Four exact values are worth memorising, because they never round: 6 minutes = 0.1, 15 = 0.25, 30 = 0.5, 45 = 0.75. Between them, a single minute is worth about 0.0167 of an hour.

The two-decimal entries do not land exactly on a whole minute, which is the price of rounding earlier. It is a difference of seconds, not minutes, so it rarely matters — but it is the reason to keep the H:MM version of a timesheet as the record of truth and treat decimal as the export format.
How do you convert hours, minutes and seconds to decimal?
Seconds turn up in call logs, billing timers, and stopwatch-style tracking. Divide them by 3600, since an hour holds 3,600 seconds.
7:45:30 → 7 + (45 ÷ 60) + (30 ÷ 3600) = 7 + 0.75 + 0.008333… = 7.7583, which rounds to 7.76 decimal hours.
The same answer comes from converting everything to seconds first: 7 × 3600 + 45 × 60 + 30 = 27,930, and 27,930 ÷ 3600 = 7.7583. A shorter one: 2:30:45 is 2 + 0.5 + 0.0125 = 2.5125 hours, or 2.51 rounded.
How do you convert a whole timesheet to decimal?
This is where conversions actually cost money, because the order of operations changes the total. Take a real week:

The safest method is to add in H:MM first and convert once at the end: 2,405 minutes ÷ 60 = 40.0833…, or 40:05 on the clock and 40.08 in decimal. Adding the five two-decimal day figures gives the same 40.08, so two decimal places per day is safe.
Coarser rounding is not. Round each day to the nearest quarter hour and the same week becomes 8.25 + 7.75 + 9.00 + 6.50 + 8.50 = 40.00 — five minutes short of the hours actually worked. At $22.00 an hour that is $881.83 versus $880.00, a difference of $1.83. Quarter-hour rounding can also go the other way in a different week; the point is that it moves the number, while a two-decimal conversion does not.
If a run of weeks happened to round down the same way, the gap compounds: 0.0833 hours a week is about 4.3 hours a year, roughly $95 at that rate. That is a reason to check how your employer or client rounds, not a prediction about any particular job.
How do you convert decimal hours to days?
Divide by the length of the day you mean. For calendar days, divide by 24: 40.08 ÷ 24 = 1.67 days of elapsed time. For working days on an 8-hour standard, divide by 8: 40.08 ÷ 8 = 5.01 days — the week above is a hair over five full days. Use the same division for a 7.5-hour or 12-hour day; only the divisor changes.

Where conversions usually go wrong
- Copying the minutes after the decimal point. Writing 1:30 as 1.30 instead of 1.50 loses 0.2 hours — 12 minutes on one entry.
- Dividing by 100. Minutes are sixtieths, not hundredths. 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45 is wrong; 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 is right.
- Reading decimals as minutes. 0.5 hours is 30 minutes, not 50. 0.75 is 45 minutes, not 75.
- Rounding early and often. Convert the total once. Rounding every day to quarter hours is what turned 40:05 into 40.00 above.
- Mixing formats in one column. A column holding both
8.5and8:30will sum to nonsense in any spreadsheet. Pick one per column. - Forgetting to subtract unpaid breaks. Convert paid time, not elapsed time — an 8:30 shift with a 30-minute unpaid lunch is 8.00 decimal hours, not 8.50.
