How to Convert Minutes to Decimal Hours
Divide the minutes by 60. That's the whole rule: 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25, 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, 38 ÷ 60 = 0.6333, which rounds to 0.63. Then put the whole hours in front — a 7-hour, 38-minute shift is 7.63 decimal hours. Never write 38 minutes as 0.38.
The conversion, step by step
Payroll systems, invoicing tools, and spreadsheets all want hours as a single decimal number. Clocks give you hours and minutes. Converting between them takes one division, as long as you divide by 60 and not by 100.
- Separate the hours from the minutes.
7:38is 7 whole hours plus 38 minutes. The 7 doesn't change; only the 38 needs work. - Divide the minutes by 60.
38 ÷ 60 = 0.6333… - Round to two decimal places. 0.6333 becomes 0.63. Pick a number of decimals and use it for every entry.
- Add the whole hours back.
7 + 0.63 = 7.63decimal hours. - Check by multiplying back.
0.63 × 60 = 37.8, which rounds to 38 minutes. The check caught nothing here — but it catches a misplaced decimal instantly. - Apply the pay rate, if you need pay.
7.63 × $19.50 = $148.79.

Only four of those are exact two-decimal values: 15 minutes (0.25), 30 minutes (0.50), 45 minutes (0.75), and a full hour. Everything else repeats forever and has to be rounded somewhere.
Is there a shortcut for doing this in your head?
Two, and both are worth knowing.
Divide by 6 to get tenths. Since minutes ÷ 60 is the same as (minutes ÷ 6) ÷ 10, dividing by 6 gives you the answer in tenths of an hour. For 38 minutes: 38 ÷ 6 ≈ 6.33 tenths, so 0.633 hours. For 22 minutes: 22 ÷ 6 ≈ 3.67 tenths, so 0.37 rounded. It's easier to divide by 6 than by 60 without a calculator.
Memorise the exact tenths. Every 6 minutes is exactly one tenth of an hour, which gives you ten clean anchors:

Anything in between is a short hop from an anchor. 39 minutes? That's 36 plus 3, so 0.6 plus half a tenth, or 0.65. Check it: 39 ÷ 60 = 0.65 exactly.
What about more than 60 minutes?
The same division works no matter how large the number — you don't have to split off the hours first if you'd rather not.
Say a job log records 295 minutes. Divide straight through: 295 ÷ 60 = 4.9166…, so 4.92 decimal hours. If you want it back in clock format, 295 minutes is 4 whole hours (240 minutes) with 55 left over, so 4:55. Both describe the same amount of time.
A couple more, worth checking yourself: 135 ÷ 60 = 2.25 hours, which is 2:15. 495 ÷ 60 = 8.25 hours, which is 8:15. And 500 ÷ 60 = 8.3333, so 8.33 hours, or 8:20 on a clock.
Working entirely in minutes and converting once at the end is actually the most accurate way to total a timesheet, for the reason in the next section.
How does rounding cost you money?
Rounding each entry and then adding is not the same as adding first and rounding once. The gap is small, but it's real and it's systematic.
Here's a full week, converted both ways:

Add the rounded daily decimals and you get 39.49. Add the minutes first — 2370 minutes — and divide once: 2370 ÷ 60 = 39.5 exactly, which is 39:30. The rounded route loses 0.01 hours. At $25 an hour that's 39.50 × 25 = $987.50 versus 39.49 × 25 = $987.25: a quarter.
A quarter a week isn't a scandal. But the same drift applies to every employee, every week, and it always runs in whichever direction your rounding happens to favour. Totalling in minutes and converting once removes the question entirely.
What does the 0.38 mistake actually cost?
The most common error isn't rounding — it's typing the minutes straight after the decimal point. Someone works 7 hours 38 minutes and writes 7.38.
The correct figure is 7.63. The difference is 7.6333 − 7.38 = 0.2533 hours, which is about 15 minutes of unpaid work. At $19.50 an hour that's 0.2533 × 19.50 ≈ $4.94 gone from one shift.
The error isn't always in the worker's favour or the employer's — it depends on the minutes. Under 6 minutes the mistake overstates the time; above that it understates it, and it's worst around the 38-minute mark. Either way the number is wrong. Should I round to quarter hours instead?
Some employers record time in quarter-hour increments — 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00 — rounding each punch to the nearest 15 minutes. Under that scheme, an 8:38 shift rounds to 8:45, or 8.75 hours, because 38 is closer to 45 than to 30.
Quarter-hour rounding is common in US payroll and is generally acceptable when it's applied neutrally, so that over time it averages out rather than consistently favouring the employer. Rules on rounding, recordkeeping, and what counts as hours worked vary by state and by how your employer is classified. If you're not required to round, don't. Two decimal places from the exact minutes is more accurate and just as easy.
How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?
Reverse the division: multiply the decimal fraction by 60.
0.75 × 60 = 45— so 6.75 hours is 6:45.0.4 × 60 = 24— so 3.4 hours is 3:24.0.85 × 60 = 51— so 6.85 hours is 6:51.0.63 × 60 = 37.8— so 7.63 hours is about 7:38, the rounding showing up as that stray 0.8.
This is the check step from the method above, and it's the fastest way to spot a bad entry: if the minutes come back as something absurd, the decimal was wrong.
A worked invoice, start to finish
Suppose you're a contractor at $65 an hour and you logged three sessions this week: 1:45, 2:20, and 0:50.
Convert each to minutes: 105, 140, and 50. Add them: 105 + 140 + 50 = 295 minutes. Convert once: 295 ÷ 60 = 4.9166… hours, which is 4:55 in H:MM and 4.92 rounded to two decimals.
Now the pay. On the exact figure: 295 × $65 ÷ 60 = $319.58. On the rounded 4.92: 4.92 × $65 = $319.80 — 22 cents higher, because 4.92 is a hair above the true 4.9166. Both are defensible; just be consistent about which one you invoice, and say on the invoice whether you're billing 4:55 or 4.92 hours.
