Why is the average 173.33 hours and not 160?

The shortcut “four weeks of 40 hours” gives 160, but four weeks is only 28 days. Every month except February is longer than that. A year has 52 weeks, so the average month is 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks, and:

• 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours a year
• 2,080 ÷ 12 = 173.33 hours a month
• In hours and minutes, that is 173:20 — one third of an hour is 20 minutes, not 33.

The gap looks small, 13.33 hours a month, but over twelve months it is 160 hours: four full working weeks that the 160-hour shortcut quietly drops. That matters most when you turn a monthly salary into an hourly rate, covered below.

How many work hours does each month of 2026 have?

173.33 is an average. A real month has a fixed number of weekdays, and at 8 hours a day that sets its hours. Here is every month of 2026, counting Monday through Friday before any holidays or time off:

Two things stand out. The busiest month (184 hours) has 24 more hours than the lightest (160), so a fixed monthly salary works out to a different effective hourly rate each month. And 2026 has 261 weekdays, so its calendar total is 2,088, a little above the standard 2,080. Years have 260, 261 or 262 weekdays depending on where they start; 2,080 is the round convention. Subtract any unworked holidays from these figures — each one is 8 hours off the month.

How many hours a month is my weekly schedule?

Use the same formula for any schedule: weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12.

Pay periods follow the same logic. Biweekly pay covers two weeks, so a 40-hour schedule is 80 hours a period and usually 26 periods a year (occasionally 27, depending on the calendar). Semi-monthly pay, on the 15th and the last day, splits the year into 24 periods of 2,080 ÷ 24 = 86.67 hours on average. How do you total the hours you actually worked in a month?

Averages are for planning. For a pay check or an invoice, total the real days:

1. Mark the month's first and last day. Months rarely start on a Monday, so the first and last weeks are usually partial. Only days dated inside the month count.
2. Total each day in hours and minutes. Clock-out minus clock-in, minus unpaid breaks, kept as H:MM.
3. Subtotal each week, using only the in-month days for the first and last weeks.
4. Add the weekly subtotals in H:MM, carrying every 60 minutes into an hour.
5. Convert the month total to decimal hours by dividing the minutes by 60.
6. Multiply by your hourly rate — and check overtime week by week, not against the month.

The weekly subtotals are the same numbers you would produce in a weekly timesheet; the month is just those weeks added together.

Worked example: one month from weekly subtotals

A month with 20 working days, spread across five calendar weeks. The first week has 3 days inside the month and the last has 2. Pay rate $20.00 an hour.

• Hours: 24 + 38 + 41 + 36 + 16 = 155.
• Minutes: 45 + 30 + 15 + 45 + 30 = 165, which is 2:45.
• Month total: 155:00 + 2:45 = 157:45.
• Decimal: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75, so 157.75 hours.
• Pay: 157.75 × $20.00 = $3,155.00.

Now the usual mistake: typing the subtotals into a phone calculator as if they were decimals. 24.45 + 38.30 + 41.15 + 36.45 + 16.30 = 156.65, and 156.65 × $20.00 = $3,133.00 — $22.00 short for the month, because 45 minutes is 0.75 of an hour, not 0.45. Notice also that this month has 157:45 on 20 working days, while the 2026 table would put a 20-weekday month at 160. Neither number is wrong: the table is scheduled time, the example is time actually worked.

How do you convert a monthly salary to an hourly rate?

Divide by the average monthly hours for the schedule, not by 160. For a $4,000 monthly salary on a 40-hour week:

• Correct: $4,000 ÷ 173.33 = $23.08 an hour (the same as $48,000 ÷ 2,080).
• Shortcut: $4,000 ÷ 160 = $25.00 an hour — about $1.92 too high.

Is overtime counted by the month?

Generally no. Under US federal rules, overtime is based on each fixed workweek, not on the calendar month or the pay period. A 184-hour month of five-day, 8-hour weeks has no overtime at all, while a month under 173.33 hours can still contain one 46-hour week that does.
