How to Convert Hours to Minutes (and Back)
To convert hours to minutes, multiply the hours by 60 and add any leftover minutes. 7:45 is 7 × 60 + 45 = 465 minutes. For decimal hours, multiply by 60 directly: 2.5 hours is 2.5 × 60 = 150 minutes. To go back, divide by 60; the whole number is hours and the remainder is minutes.
Is your time written as H:MM or as decimal hours?
Check this first, because the same digits mean different amounts of time. 2:30 on a clock is two hours and thirty minutes. 2.30 hours on a payroll report is two hours and thirty hundredths of an hour, which is only 18 minutes past the second hour.
2:30= 2 × 60 + 30 = 150 minutes.2.30hours = 2 × 60 + 0.30 × 60 = 120 + 18 = 138 minutes.
That is a 12-minute gap from a single entry. A colon means the digits after it are minutes. A decimal point means they are a fraction of an hour. If you are not sure which one a report uses, look for a value above 59 after the separator (like 7.75): that can only be decimal hours. What are decimal hours explains why payroll uses them.
How do you convert hours to minutes step by step?
- Check the format. H:MM (a colon) or decimal hours (a point), as above.
- Multiply the whole hours by 60. For
7:45, 7 × 60 = 420 minutes. - Add the minutes, or convert the decimal part. For H:MM, add the minutes as they are: 420 + 45 =
465. For decimal hours, multiply the part after the point by 60 and add it:8.25hours is 480 + 0.25 × 60 = 480 + 15 =495minutes. (Or multiply the whole decimal by 60 at once: 8.25 × 60 = 495.) - Check by converting back. 465 ÷ 60 = 7 remainder 45, which is
7:45. If you do not land where you started, a step slipped.
A few more, so the pattern sticks:
12:30= 720 + 30 = 750 minutes.1.75hours = 60 + 45 = 105 minutes (1:45).0.4hours = 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes (0:24).3:05= 180 + 5 = 185 minutes.

How do you convert minutes back to hours and minutes?
Divide by 60. The whole number is the hours, and what is left over is the minutes.
465minutes: 465 ÷ 60 = 7, and 7 × 60 = 420, so the remainder is 465 − 420 = 45. Answer:7:45.1,000minutes: 16 × 60 = 960, remainder 40. Answer:16:40.95minutes: 1 × 60 = 60, remainder 35. Answer:1:35.
If you want decimal hours instead, just divide and keep the decimal: 1,000 ÷ 60 = 16.67 hours (16.666…). Do not read that as 16:67. The .67 is two-thirds of an hour, which is 40 minutes. How to convert minutes to decimal hours has a quick-reference table for that direction.
How do you convert hours to seconds?
Go to minutes first, then multiply by 60 again, or multiply hours by 3,600 in one go. 7:45 is 465 minutes, and 465 × 60 = 27,900 seconds. One hour is 3,600 seconds and a 24-hour day is 86,400.
Why convert to minutes at all?
Minutes turn a base-60 problem into ordinary arithmetic. Once every time is a plain number of minutes, a regular calculator can add, subtract, multiply, and divide them without the carry errors that come from typing 7.45 for 7:45. Convert at the start, do the math, and convert back once at the end. That is the method behind adding hours and minutes and multiplying and dividing time.
Worked example: total a week in minutes
Here is a five-shift week, already net of unpaid breaks, paid at $19 an hour.
| Day | Hours (H:MM) | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 7:45 | 465 |
| Tuesday | 8:20 | 500 |
| Wednesday | 6:55 | 415 |
| Thursday | 8:10 | 490 |
| Friday | 5:40 | 340 |
| Total | 36:50 | 2,210 |
- Convert each day to minutes (the right-hand column).
- Add the minutes: 465 + 500 + 415 + 490 + 340 =
2,210. - Convert back: 2,210 ÷ 60 = 36 remainder 50 (36 × 60 = 2,160), so the week is
36:50. - Work out pay: 36:50 is 36 + 50 ÷ 60 = 36.83 hours (36.833…). 36.8333 × $19 = $699.83.
Now the shortcut that goes wrong. Type the clock times straight into a calculator as decimals, 7.45 + 8.20 + 6.55 + 8.10 + 5.40, and you get 35.70. That looks like 35.7 hours and pays 35.70 × $19 = $678.30, which is $21.53 short. The week is really 36.83 hours; the shortcut lost 1:08 of work. How to calculate a weekly timesheet covers breaks and overnight shifts, and how to calculate pay from hours worked covers overtime. Overtime rules vary by employer, state, and contract; this is general information, not legal or tax advice.
What mistakes give the wrong number of minutes?
Reading decimal hours as clock time
A payroll line of 1.15 hours is 1 hour and 9 minutes (0.15 × 60 = 9), not 1:15. Going the other way, 1:15 is 1.25 hours. Mix the two up and every entry drifts.
Multiplying the H:MM digits by 60
7.45 × 60 = 447, but 7:45 is 465 minutes. Multiply only the hours by 60, then add the minutes as they are. The shortcut is 18 minutes short on one shift.
Rounding the decimal before converting
7:20 is 7.333… hours. Round it to 7.33 and convert back and you get 7.33 × 60 = 439.8 minutes, not 440. One shift barely notices; a month of shifts does. Start from the H:MM time when you have it.
Writing a remainder as a decimal
1,000 minutes is 16:40 or 16.67 hours. It is never 16:67 or 16.40. Pick one format and stick to it on a given timesheet.
Let the app handle the 60s
Hours adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides times in H:MM, so you never convert to minutes by hand (7:45 + 8:20 + 6:55 + 8:10 + 5:40 = 36:50). Frequently asked questions
How many minutes are in an hour?
60. That makes 1,440 minutes in a 24-hour day, 480 in an 8-hour shift, and 2,400 in a 40-hour week.
How many minutes is 1.5 hours?
90 minutes: 60 for the whole hour plus 0.5 × 60 = 30. On a clock that is 1:30.
How many minutes is 2.3 hours?
138 minutes. 2 × 60 = 120, and 0.3 × 60 = 18, so 120 + 18 = 138, which is 2:18. It is not 2:30, which is 150 minutes.
How many minutes is 3 hours 20 minutes?
200 minutes. 3 × 60 = 180, plus 20. In decimal hours that is 3.33.
How do you convert 500 minutes to hours?
Divide by 60: 500 ÷ 60 = 8 remainder 20, so 8:20. As decimal hours it is 8.33 (8.333…).
How many minutes is 0.1 of an hour?
6 minutes, because 0.1 × 60 = 6. That is why billing in tenths of an hour means 6-minute increments; the billable hours chart lists every minute.
