How to Multiply and Divide Hours and Minutes
To multiply or divide hours and minutes, convert the time to minutes, do the math, then divide by 60 to get back to H:MM. 7:45 × 5 is 465 × 5 = 2,325 minutes, which is 38:45. Dividing reverses it: 38:45 ÷ 5 is 2,325 ÷ 5 = 465 minutes, or 7:45.
Why can’t you just type 7:45 × 5 into a calculator?
Because a calculator counts in tens and a clock counts in sixties. Type 7.45 × 5 and you get 37.25. But 7:45 is seven hours and three quarters of an hour, which is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. The real answer is 38.75 hours, or 38:45. The calculator came up an hour and a half short, and nothing on the screen tells you so.
The same trap catches adding hours and minutes and subtracting time. With multiplication it is worse, because the error is multiplied too: the bigger the number you multiply by, the further off the answer drifts.
How do you multiply hours and minutes step by step?
- Convert the time to minutes. Hours × 60, plus the minutes.
7:45is 7 × 60 + 45 =465minutes. - Multiply the minutes.
465 × 5 = 2,325minutes. - Divide by 60. The whole number is the hours and the remainder is the minutes. 2,325 ÷ 60 = 38, remainder 45 (because 38 × 60 = 2,280, and 2,325 − 2,280 = 45). The answer is
38:45. - Handle any fractional minute. If the minutes come out with a decimal, the fraction is seconds.
7:45 × 0.3is 465 × 0.3 = 139.5 minutes, which is2:19:30(2 hours, 19 minutes, 30 seconds). Round to a whole minute only at the very end, if at all. - Check by reversing.
38:45 ÷ 5should land back on7:45. If it does not, one of the steps slipped.
The decimal-hours shortcut
If you are comfortable with decimal hours, convert first and multiply second. 7:45 is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. 7.75 × 5 = 38.75. To turn the answer back into H:MM, multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.75 × 60 = 45, so 38.75 hours is 38:45. This works well when the minutes convert cleanly (:15, :30, :45). For awkward minutes like :20 or :50, keep the full decimal or use minutes instead, for the reason in the mistakes section below. The hours to decimal guide has the full conversion table.
The carry method
You can also multiply the hours and the minutes separately and carry the overflow. 7:45 × 5 is 35 hours plus 225 minutes. 225 minutes is 3:45, so the total is 35:00 + 3:45 = 38:45. It is the same carry you do when adding times, just in one step.
How do you divide hours and minutes?
There are two different questions hiding behind “divide time,” and they give two different kinds of answer.
Time ÷ a number = a time
This splits a total into equal parts: a week into an average day, a job into equal shares, a block of hours across several people. Convert to minutes, divide, convert back.
38:45 ÷ 5= 2,325 ÷ 5 = 465 minutes =7:45.40:00 ÷ 3= 2,400 ÷ 3 = 800 minutes =13:20.37:10 ÷ 4= 2,230 ÷ 4 = 557.5 minutes =9:17:30. Check: 9:17:30 × 4 = 36:00 + 68 minutes + 120 seconds = 36:00 + 70 minutes =37:10.
Dividing a total by the number of shifts or weeks is how you get an average. Five shifts that add up to 41:15 average 2,475 ÷ 5 = 495 minutes, or 8:15 a shift. How to calculate average hours per week covers which weeks belong in the count.
Time ÷ a time = a plain number
This asks how many times one length of time fits into another, so the answer has no unit. Convert both times to minutes and divide.
38:45 ÷ 7:45= 2,325 ÷ 465 = 5 shifts.- How many 25-minute sessions fit in 3:20? 200 ÷ 25 = 8.
- How many 7:30 work days is 40:00? 2,400 ÷ 450 = 5.33 days. How to convert hours to days shows how to split that into whole days and leftover hours.
The one thing not to do is read that plain number as a time. 5.33 days is not “5 days and 33 minutes”; it is 5 days plus a third of a day.
How much do the shortcuts get wrong?
Here is what you get from typing the clock time straight into a calculator, against the right answer. Every “typed” result below is what the calculator actually returns.
| Problem | Right answer | In decimal hours | Typed as a decimal | Off by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7:45 × 5 | 38:45 | 38.75 | 7.45 × 5 = 37.25 | 1:30 |
| 8:30 × 4 | 34:00 | 34.00 | 8.30 × 4 = 33.20 | 0:48 |
| 2:40 × 1.5 | 4:00 | 4.00 | 2.40 × 1.5 = 3.60 | 0:24 |
| 38:45 ÷ 5 | 7:45 | 7.75 | 38.45 ÷ 5 = 7.69 | about 0:04 |
| 37:10 ÷ 4 | 9:17:30 | 9.29 | 37.10 ÷ 4 = 9.275 | about 0:01 |
Multiplication is where it hurts: the error per unit is multiplied along with everything else. Division shrinks the error, which makes it easy to miss, but a minute or four a day still adds up across a pay period.
How do you multiply hours and minutes by a pay rate?
Money is the one place you must leave H:MM behind. A pay rate is dollars per decimal hour, so convert the time to decimal hours, then multiply.
38:45= 38.75 hours. At $22 an hour, 38.75 × 22 = $852.50.- Typed as 38.45 × 22, it comes to $845.90: $6.60 short for the week.
The same rule applies to time-and-a-half. You multiply the rate by 1.5, not the hours, and pay the overtime hours at that rate. How to calculate pay from hours worked walks through a full week with overtime and two rates. Overtime rules vary by employer, state and contract; this is general information, not legal or tax advice.
Worked example: estimate a job, then split it
A cleaning crew has timed one apartment turnover at 1:35. There are 14 units to turn, three people on the crew, and labor costs $24 an hour.
- Total time:
1:35 × 14. 1:35 is 95 minutes, and 95 × 14 = 1,330 minutes. 1,330 ÷ 60 = 22, remainder 10, so the job is22:10of work. - Time per person:
22:10 ÷ 3. 1,330 ÷ 3 = 443.33 minutes, which is7:23:20, or about 7 hours 23 minutes each, if the work splits evenly. - Labor cost: 22:10 is 22 + 10 ÷ 60 = 22.1667 hours. 22.1667 × $24 = $532.00.
Typing 1.35 × 14 instead gives 18.9, a job that looks more than three hours shorter than it is (22:10 is 22.17 hours). Quote from that and the crew runs past the estimate before the last few units. For crews where each person logs different hours, add each person’s time rather than multiplying; how to calculate man-hours explains why.
What mistakes come up most?
Rounding the decimal too early
7:20 is 7.3333… hours. Round it to 7.33 and multiply by 30 and you get 219.9 hours, which is 219:54. The exact answer is 440 × 30 = 13,200 minutes = 220:00. Six minutes vanished in the rounding. Multiply in minutes, or keep every decimal place until the last step.
Reading a decimal answer as H:MM
38.75 hours is 38:45, not 38:75 (which is not a time) and not 38 hours 7 minutes. The digits after the point are a fraction of an hour. Multiply them by 60 to get minutes.
Multiplying a time by a time
2:00 × 3:00 has no everyday meaning; “six square hours” is not a duration. If a problem seems to need it, one of the numbers is really a count (3 people, 3 days) and should be typed as a plain number.
Dropping the seconds from a division
37:10 ÷ 4 is 9:17:30. Writing it as 9:17 is fine for a rough plan, but multiply 9:17 back by 4 and you get 37:08, two minutes short. If the split has to add back up exactly, give one share the extra minute or keep the seconds.
Multiply and divide time without converting by hand
Hours does the base-60 math for you. Multiply a shift by the days you work it (8:40 × 4 = 34:40), divide a week into an average day (38:45 ÷ 5 = 7:45), add and subtract times with the carry handled, and tap once to see any total in decimal hours (38:45 = 38.75). Enter your hourly rate to see pay, keep your work in saved history, and export a CSV or PDF timesheet. Free, offline, no ads, no tracking, no sign-in.
Frequently asked questions
How do you multiply hours and minutes by a number?
Convert the time to minutes, multiply, and divide by 60. 7:45 × 5 is 465 × 5 = 2,325 minutes, which is 38:45. Or convert to decimal hours first: 7.75 × 5 = 38.75 hours, which is 38:45.
How do you divide hours and minutes?
Convert to minutes, divide, and convert back. 38:45 ÷ 5 is 2,325 ÷ 5 = 465 minutes, or 7:45. Dividing one time by another, like 38:45 ÷ 7:45, gives a plain number: 2,325 ÷ 465 = 5.
What is 8 hours 30 minutes times 5?
42:30, or 42.5 hours. 510 minutes × 5 = 2,550 minutes, and 2,550 ÷ 60 = 42 remainder 30.
What is 40 hours divided by 3?
13:20, or 13.33 hours. 2,400 minutes ÷ 3 = 800 minutes, which is 13 hours and 20 minutes.
How do you multiply hours and minutes by an hourly rate?
Convert the time to decimal hours, then multiply. 38:45 is 38.75 hours, so at $22 an hour it pays $852.50. Typing 38.45 × 22 gives $845.90, which is $6.60 short.
Why does 7.45 × 5 give the wrong answer?
Because the 45 in 7:45 is minutes, which is 0.75 of an hour, not 0.45. 7:45 is 7.75 hours. 7.45 × 5 = 37.25, but 7.75 × 5 = 38.75, which is 38:45. The calculator is 1:30 short. Why your phone’s calculator can’t add time explains the trap in more detail.
